The scooter came last June 1st. They delivered right to the door and the driver stayed to help open the huuuuge box It looks bigger in real life than in the photos. Sharp styling, easy to operate and read the control panel. The Captain’s seat is super well made and comfy. This is a solid machine. No jiggles or rattles and it really is stunning to look at. It cam already assembled – it just needed to be charged. Tuesday morning was the first run. I tried it before Dad did and boy, this thing moves. I was going so fast, my eyes teared up. It is stable and quiet on gravel trails (most of the trails around here are gravel) Dad took it to the mall and tried it in the aisles of the grocery store. He carried a little basket on the floor as there really isn’t a cargo basket that comes with it. There are two little storage areas behind the front shield but they wouldn’t hold a lot of groceries. I attached a backpack through the headrest so Dad can carry his groceries. I think we are going to get a large rear basket just for the sake of convienience. The only problem he had was going through the check out. He had to fold the mirrors in as they extend a little wide

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday brought more excursions (60 kms so far) and Dad is extreeeemely happy with our choice. I rigged up a heavy duty rain poncho to keep him and the scooter dry. He can just fold it up when not in use. If he had to rate it out of 10, I think he might just give it an 11. He keeps saying that it just doesn’t look like an “old fart” scooter. He was expecting to be disappointed as the photos make it look so good. Fortunately, his expectation was wrong. He was genuinely suprised and pleased when we made opened up the box. I asked him if he would recommend this scooter and he said he wouldn’t recommend any other scooter than the EV Rider Royale 4.

Ameriglide Traveler 3 Mobility Scooter

If you’ve been considering purchasing a mobility scooter, you’ve probably already seen a lot of different products available on the internet via different suppliers and manufacturers. With so many choices on today’s market, you may be wondering where your dollar is best spent. The reality is that, much like automobile shoppers, every scooter shopper has a different set of needs and preferences. Today we’re going to examine one of the most popular models of electric scooters available for people with mobility impairments, and identify which users will find this to be a good buy and which users may want something different.

One of the current bestsellers in the mobility scooter market is the AmeriGlide Traveler. The Traveler is a 3 wheel travel scooter and is designed for easy portability. The Traveler breaks down into five separate components to make it easier to take along with you in a car, on a bus, or aboard an airplane. The heaviest of these pieces when the scooter is broken down is only 28 pounds; the entire scooter weighs about 92 pounds when fully assembled.

The AmeriGlide Traveler has several features that make it a good choice for casual scooter users. For starters, it comes equipped with flat-free tires – they’re made of solid high-impact rubber to avoid the inconvenience of a flat tire while you’re on the go. The Traveler also has an electromechanical braking system, which uses the kinetic energy absorbed by the brakes to power the motor and supplement the lifespan of a single battery charge. This allows the AmeriGlide Traveler to go up to 8 miles before needing a recharge. The Traveler also has a relatively low turning radius, which is a measurement of how much distance you need to make a full 180-degree turn during operation. You can turn around on a Traveler with only about 33 inches of room (less than three feet).

By far, though, the most attractive thing about the AmeriGlide Traveler is its price – at $549.99, it is nearly $250 cheaper than the next lowest-priced premium scooter on today’s market, with very similar operational specs and warranty coverage (generally, a one-year warranty that covers parts and service and brings a technician directly to your home). With a maximum weight capacity of 275 pounds, the AmeriGlide Traveler will suit most users fine.

However, if you have certain needs, the AmeriGlide Traveler may not be for you. Users weighing more than 275 pounds will want to look toward heavy duty mobility scooter models, such as the Pride Wrangler or the Golden Avenger. Also, because the AmeriGlide Traveler has a very low ground clearance (about 1.4 inches), it’s not ideal for rough outdoor terrain. A model with higher ground clearance, ideally a heavy duty scooter, is recommended for users who need to be able to negotiate grass, rocky ground, or uneven sidewalks and pavement. Finally, if your impairment is severe enough that you require a very stable mobility aid, you are probably better off buying a 4 wheel scooter for your own safety.

For all other users who don’t fit those exceptions mentioned above, however, the AmeriGlide Traveler is a very cost-effective mobility scooter that will serve you well in day-to-day travel and is easily portable if you like to travel frequently.

(Press Release) – Lawyers have called for changes to be made to the law regarding insurance of mobility scooters. Personal Injury lawyers have proposed there should be a review of the Road Traffic Act to make it compulsory for those who use mobility scooters to take out insurance.

Mobility scooters are not currently classed as motor vehicles and the fastest speed they can usually attain is 8mph. The current law does not require users of mobility scooters to take out insurance, or to even take a test before using such a vehicle, however, there has been in an increase in the number of reported incidents involving mobility scooters in which someone has been injured.

There have been several reports of people sustaining injuries as a result of being knocked down by scooters. At present those who have suffered injuries in such a way have no method of seeking compensation for their personal injuries, other than by suing the negligent user.

A group of Brighton solicitors have called for parliament to make insurance on mobility scooters compulsory. The need to review the current law has received increased support following the recent incident involving a 70 year old woman from Leigh. Last week the lady in question was seriously injured when a scooter crashed into her. As a direct result of the accident the lady requires a hip replacement and has reported that she is in agonising pain.

In light of these recent incidents, parliament is currently considering whether there is a need for users of mobility scooters to take out insurance. The DVLA has indicated its support for such changes and has highlighted that it strongly advises owners of mobility scooters to take out insurance cover. The group of solicitors in Brighton, amongst many others, are also in support of these changes.

Users of mobility scooters argue that compulsory insurance would significantly increase the cost of using a scooter and may prevent many people who rely on these vehicles to get about from using them.

The issue of compulsory insurance for mobility scooters is once more in the news as an accident in a shopping centre resulted in a pensioner spending a week in hospital.

Audrey King 70, from Leigh near Wigan, suffered a broken hip and a fracture her thigh bone when she was struck by a Mobility Scooter. The rider of the mobility scooter had reportedly lost control of her vehicle after she snagged her coat on the scooter causing the collision with Mrs King.

Mrs King has now decided to launch a personal injury compensation claim against the rider of the vehicle. This is one of the first cases of a mobility scooter owner being taken to court after an accident caused by a collision with a pedestrian.

Currently insurance for mobility scooters is not mandatory and it is believed that the vehicle owner in question did not have insurance. This has left Mrs King with no option other than to sue the rider of the vehicle who will not be covered by any insurance company policy.

As well as a broken hip and a fractured femur Mrs King had to stay in hospital for six days and has not yet fully recovered. In fact it could be up to two years before a full recovery is expected and a hip replacement operation may also be required.

Mrs King is to launch a personal injury compensation claim against the rider on grounds of negligence and has stated to the Daily Mail “I have nothing against her personally but she wasn’t covered by insurance, it is going to take me two years to recover from this injury. I face a long, hard road to rehabilitation”

This is not the first accident of its kind, in fact a 90 year old woman was killed after being knocked down by a mobility scooter on the Isle of Wight in 2009 and more recently a toddler was injured in Doncaster after being struck by a scooter.

A Department for Transport review took place in 2005 with regards to safety issue surrounding Mobility Scooters and recommended third party insurance to deal with cases where people are injured by accidents involving mobility scooters.

The recommendations 2057919930 of the report have not yet passed into legislation leaving personal injury accident victims such as Mrs King also suffering uncertainty as to whether it’s possible to obtain a measure of compensation to alleviate their suffering.

Glenn from mobility-scooter-reviews.com here.

I am trying to get to the bottom of an issue that could be quite serious for mobility scooter & power wheelchair owners.

One of my readers mentioned to me that on a few occasions he had broken down, and had a difficult time getting help to carry his power wheelchair home. He mentioned that the police would carry himself, but didn’t have a vehicle at the time that could carry his power wheelchair. The wheelchair capable taxis at the time also weren’t available. So he ended up at home without his mobility device that he needs to get around inside his house.

It seems that the Police should be the people helping this person, including carrying their wheelchair or mobility scooter. Police departments around the world all have different policies on how they handle mobility equipment, so it may or may not be a problem in your area.

I have an idea that uses new Twitter type technology that could build a disabled emergency network, so all people that own disability equipment capable vehicles can register, and be available via twitter notification to help fellow travelers of mobility devices. So all people within a 10 mile radius who registered with the service would be notified that a person with mobility device is broken down and needs transport. The person taking the call would then respond with a tweet that they are responding to the call so all the others on the network know they don’t need to respond.

Some of the logistics could become a problem, but seems like a good idea for discussion.

Perhaps if Police don’t have a van to carry the mobility equipment they could send out the notification to the network.

So I would like to know if you’ve had any breakdowns and how you dealt with it, whether you called police, a taxi, or your family or friend? And could they easily carry your mobility device?

“I live in Richmond, BC, Canada, and decided to buy a mobility scooter a year ago. As with most things, the price of scooters in Canada seems to be much more than the US, and buying over the internet seem more troublesome. I belong to the old school anyways, and prefer to visit a shop rather than buying online. Moreover, for such a large investment I’d like to try various models first, and be able to ask many questions one-on-one.

At that time, I could only find one store that operated locally. I was surprised when I visited it, as it was just one person renting a small back office from another company, and had two scooters on site. He explained they are a small family company, and as they do mostly mobile services (as clients often can’t visit them), there was no need for a store.

The owner was very nice and professional, but I prefer a company which has been in the business for a longer time, and which is of a larger scale. Again – this is strictly personal preference.

As I don’t know anyone with a mobility scooter, I went to the Muscular Dystrophy Canada online chat group, and asked for recommendations and advice. I finally ended up going to a company that is highly recommended, and has been around for many years. The salesperson I spoke to is very knowledgeable, and based on my requirements that I need a compact scooter and a Bruno lift that fits in my RAV4 – plus obviously what models they carry – he recommended the Invacare Lynx L3X.

I like this scooter as I need the ability to manoeuvre small spaces like elevators and a one-bedroom apartment. Plus it is collapsible and can even be taken apart. The L3X can also go further on a fully charged battery than a L3.

One thing I like about the purchase experience was that the salesperson took time to listen, and gave me some brochures to take home to think about. He didn’t rush me into making a quick decision.

I am fortunate enough to have coverage from the employer’s extended benefits to cover for the scooter, and only need to pay for the Bronco lift. Although my doctor has completed the form to state I really need this equipment, it still took a few months to obtain the pre-approval from the insurance company. I had to consistently call them about the approval status.

It took me a long time to get experienced with using the lift to get the scooter in and out of the car, but I must say the lift is a wonderful invention.

I enjoy using the scooter – suddenly I can “walk” as fast as others! When I go to the park and when it’s safe, I’d turn on a faster speed and feel the wind and enjoy the sense of “running” which is something I can never do. My young niece and nephew think I am really cool in it.

Usually I drive at a very low speed, as sometimes there are people who dash out from nowhere, and others who think I can stop the scooter immediately, and then others who don’t seem to see there is scooter near them. It’s pretty scary at times so I just go snail pace to be safe.

As for accessories, I feel the most important one is the reflective alert flag. Users really need it as we can’t assume all car drivers can see us when we’re in a seated position. I also have the cane holder which is useful.

One day I may get the special rain poncho but it’s a bit expensive at C$60. Then there is the tilley cover to protect the controls – although I’ve read on the internet that people improvise using those transparent shower caps!

As I like going on cruise vacations, it’s really great that most cruise ships are scooter friendly. And while I can’t use a scooter in some ports of call (eg. Those that need to use a tender boat to get ashore), there are many places that I can visit at my leisure on a scooter. Renting a scooter to use on cruise ships or theme parks is not cheap, but there are many US companies that offer the service.”

Dear Glenn,

Mobility scooters are VERY expensive in South Africa. Having COPD and not being able to walk very far, I spent weeks on the internet on overseas sites researching various scooters and prices and finally decided the Pride Go Go was for me.

My husband travels frequently on business and as the Go Go was half the price in London as it was in Johannesburg, I asked him if he could purchase one for me while he was there.

We ordered the scooter, paid for it and arranged for it to be delivered to my husband’s hotel room on the Friday he was flying home. It so happened that his business meeting that day went on longer than anticipated and finding himself short on time to get to Heathrow, he dashed back to his hotel to pick up his things and what he presumed would be a smallish box containing the scooter in bits.

Can you imagine his horror when he opened the door of his hotel room and there in the middle of the floor was a HUGE (and heavy) box? He instantly realized he would not be able to take it on the tube train to the airport so he frantically called a taxi and thankfully with the help of the driver he was able to squeeze it into the cab.

His troubles were not over. Arriving at the airport with minutes to spare before boarding the airline advised him that it was against regulations to allow a box of that size on the aircraft as luggage. Panic! Thankfully the airline (SAA) helped him by rustling up some smaller boxes and very kindly helped him open the scooter box and distribute the various parts of the scooter between the smaller boxes.

R1000.00 poorer because of duty at Johannesburg airport, but still having paid well under Johannesburg scooter prices, my husband arrived with all the little boxes at our house the next day. I was delighted with my scooter and have used it every day since. It is a wonderful little scooter and has changed my life; giving me freedom to get around my large Johannesburg garden and around various shopping malls. I have even driven it along the beach in Fish Hoek, Cape Town (where the sand was fairly solid).

Next time my husband purchases a scooter for me overseas, perhaps he will take my advice and put it together before taking it to the airport, and then bury his pride and drive it up to the check in counter. As we have discovered since, the airline will happily load it on the plane as they would a wheelchair.

Kind Regards,
