It’s not often a competition can truly change someone’s life but for local Hastings resident Gwen Nash, dtr’s mobility scooter competition has done just that. Gwen has limited mobility after having an amputation last November, and although she has a wheelchair to get around her rest home, she is completely dependent on others when she is venturing outside.
When Gwen’s daughter Joanne heard that dtr was running a local Hawke’s Bay competition to restore mobility for one lucky person, she jumped at the opportunity to enter Gwen.
“I never told mum that I had entered her, in fact when I told her she had won she thought that I was having her on! She was completely blown away, we are so thrilled for mum and would love to thank dtr. This mobility scooter is going to give her so much more independence,” she says.
The competition was a local initiative by dtr, with Hastings being picked from all of the company’s branches nationally. dtr’s goal has been to develop a range of scooters that are affordable and accessible to those affected by limited mobility.
Lisa Cunningham of dtr Hastings says, “We’ve been delighted by the response from the public, community groups and health professionals in the Hawke’s Bay who have helped make the competition a real success. We couldn’t be more delighted to have such a deserving winner in Gwen and we wish her all the best for the future.”
On Thursday morning at dtr, Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule was on hand to deliver the mobility scooter to Gwen.
“What a fantastic competition with such a worthy winner, it was great to see how much this meant to Gwen and her family. I’m sure with this scooter Gwen will be back out in the community enjoying a new lease on life,” says Mayor Yule.
And the thing that Gwen is most excited about? “Riding with the mayor!”
